Moving to a new home can be a stressful experience, especially when you are doing random packing of items without any planning. We know that planning and managing the items carefully in a proper way is hard, so we have provided a moving checklist to help you manage the process easily. A detailed checklist helps you to break down the complex moving tasks into an easy and relaxing packing experience without missing any items at our old space.

It’s a smooth shift where every detail, every item, is noted while packing and makes sure every checklist point is ticked off. Our moving checklist will take you from 8 weeks before your move to your first day in your new home. Here is a week-by-week list of what to do, how to do it, and the step-by-step packing of items so you can handle your move comfortably.

Why You Need a Packing List

A packing list is the key to a smooth move. Without one, you could end up leaving things behind at your old space, like half-packed boxes or your plants. Having a good packing list with you can make the process easier by breaking that complex packing process down into steps that you are able to manage easily and making sure you don’t forget important items like your passport or other IDs or your child’s favourite toy.

It’s important to understand the difference between a moving checklist and a packing list. The moving checklist covers things like booking movers and changing your address, whereas the packing list is geared to what and how to pack. Both are essential, but for now, let’s see what packing or moving tips to keep in mind before starting the packing process.

When to Start Packing: A Simple Timeline

You don't need to pack everything at once. Distributing the moving tasks weeks in advance can make the final moving day more comfortable and stress-free.

6 to 8 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • You have to start with collecting boxes and packing supplies.

  • Review all the items in your home and decide which items to keep and what to donate or scrap.

  • Then start packing those items that you don’t use in your daily routine, like holiday decorations or off-season clothes.

4 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Now start packing room items, and remember that you have to start with that room first, which is the least used in your home.

  • Labelling is the most important part; don’t forget it, or you will get confused while unpacking your boxes.

  • Completely finish the food items that you stored in your freezer.

2 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • At this phase, you need to pack almost everything left, except your daily-use items.

  • Keep your packing boxes and other packing items aside.

  • Most importantly, confirm your moving date and packing or moving services with Advance Moving.

Moving Week

  • Now is the time to pack things like toiletries, chargers, and a few outfits that are typically overlooked in the final day's chaos.

  • Every household's freezer is typically filled with a lot of ice; make sure to properly defrost and clean your refrigerator and freezer.

  • Do a final cleaning of closets, drawers, and cupboards.

Moving Day

  • Prepare a small box with your personal, private documents, IDs, credit cards, cash, and other valuables for the day of the move.

  • Before the movers depart, take one last look around each room, closet, and cupboard.

The Complete Room-by-Room Packing List

Here is the part that needs more attention when you start packing. Packing in the right order, room by room, keeps you organized and stops you from opening ten different boxes just to find your spoon or a roll of toilet paper.

Kitchen

You are already aware of the fact that in every household, the kitchen is the place that requires the most time in packing items. It will definitely consume a great portion of your packing time. Keep these points in mind before starting the actual work.

  • Pack dishes standing on edge, like records in a crate, not stacked flat. This means they are much less likely to crack.

  • Wrap glasses and mugs separately in packing paper.

  • Empty, clean, and dry all appliances before boxing them up, and if they fit, tuck the cords inside.

  • Wrap knives and sharp utensils in dishtowels and clearly label the box.

  • Donate unopened pantry items you won’t use before the move, and toss anything already open.

  • Make sure to mark each fragile box in big letters so it’s obvious to the person carrying it.

Living Room

  • The work starts with packing the TV, entertainment, and electrical items. You can take pictures of the connection setup before unplugging it. Taking images of connections can help you reinstall them with ease.

  • Most importantly, pack the electronic items in safe and hard boxes to avoid any kind of internal and external damage.

  • Wrap picture frames and mirrors in blankets or towels, and tape an "X" across any glass with masking tape in case it breaks.

  • When packing the rugs, roll them first, then tighten them with packing tape.

  • When it comes to the heavy part, the books should be packed carefully because although they appear light, they actually weigh more when packed in a single box.

Bedroom

  • Leave clothes on their hangers and pack them as they are in a wardrobe box.

  • As already said, keep your valuable items like jewellery with you in a small box.

  • To save money on moving costs, you can also pack some of your clothes in suitcases, drawers, and dressers that you already have.

  • Protect your mattress with a mattress bag or old sheets.

  • Pack bed sheets and pillows in large bags or boxes, and keep one pair along with you for your first night at your new location.

Bathroom

  • Pack the bathroom items last, since you'll need them right up until moving day.

  • Put all liquids like shampoo, conditioner, and lotion in sealed plastic bags in case they leak.

  • Pack medications separately in a clearly labelled box with a Plus icon you keep with you.

  • There's no point in moving anything that has expired, so discard it while you're at it.

Home Office

  • Photograph your desk setup and cable connections before unplugging anything.

  • Keep important documents like passports, contracts, and financial paperwork in one secure, labelled box you carry yourself.

  • Back up your computer before moving it, just in case you are cautious about your system.

  • Colour-code cables with tape or twist ties so setup at the new place is quick.

Kids’ Rooms

  • If they’re old enough, let kids pack their own toys. They feel a sense of control during a big change.

  • Pack a favourite toy or comfort item separately to make it easy to find on the first night.

  • If you have more than one child, label each box with the child's name so you don't get things mixed up.

Garage, Basement, and Outdoor Areas

  • Dispose of hazardous materials properly, like paint, propane tanks, and old chemicals, which usually can't go on the moving truck.

  • Properly clean the outdoor furniture and disassemble it into parts, if possible.

  • Since you'll probably need your tools until the day of the move, pack them last.

  • Cover sharp tools with cardboard or their original cases before boxing them.

How to Pack Fragile & High-Value Items

In your packing, some of the things need more attention. Have a look at those items.

  • Mirrors and artwork: Wrap in moving blankets or bubble wrap, and tape a cardboard corner on each edge for extra protection.

  • Electronics: If you have original boxes for the electronic items, then you can pack them in those boxes. If you don't have them, use a sturdy box with plenty of padding and avoid any gaps.

  • Glassware and china: Wrap each piece individually and pack tightly so nothing shifts or breaks during the move.

  • Musical instruments and pianos: These often need specialized handling and equipment. You can tell Advance Moving in advance so we can arrange the appropriate move.

Ready for a Stress-Free Move?

You already know that a full packing list can make your move into a plan that actually follows with ease. Start early, pack room by room, keep your essentials close, and don't be afraid to dispose of or give away the things that you don’t use or are just adding weight in your truck unnecessarily.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How many boxes do I need to pack a 2-bedroom apartment?

Most 2-bedroom apartments need somewhere around 30 to 45 boxes total, depending on how much you own. It's always better to have a few extra on hand than to run short mid-pack.

  1. How far in advance should I start packing?

Ideally, 6 to 8 weeks before your move date. It gives you room to pack a little at a time instead of trying to pack everything into the last few days.

  1. What's the best order to pack rooms in?

Start with rooms you use the least, like a guest room or storage area, and save your kitchen and bathroom for closer to moving day since you'll need them until the end.

  1. Does Advance Moving provide packing boxes?

Many moving companies do, including us. It's worth asking when you book, since it can save you a supply run and sometimes comes for FREE depending on the service you choose.

  1. What items won't movers transport?

Hazardous materials, perishable food, and valuables like cash or important documents are typically off-limits for the moving truck. Keep these with you in a small box in your car or personal vehicle.
